Dick's Sporting Goods profit slipped in its second quarter and missed Wall Street's expectations as the retailer cut its full-year profit outlook, citing worries over theft at its stores.Shares declined more than 24% in morning trading Tuesday. For the period ended July 29, Dick's earned $244 million, or $2.82 per share. A year earlier the company earned $319 million, or $3.25 per share.Analysts polled by FactSet predicted earnings of $3.81 per share. MiaRochel Jones, also known as MiaRochel Saengkao, 34, left her mother's residence on Camden Avenue at about 6:30 a.m. Monday. Jones was safely located Tuesday morning around 4 a.m. by a good Samaritan who saw her sitting at a bus stop in San Lorenzo, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said. She was transported to a nearby hospital due to foot pain likely caused from walking around in her slippers all night, authorities said."We want to thank the kind community member who took notice of the search for MiaRochel and acted on our call for the community’s help in finding her," the sheriff's office said. "Because of them, she was safely located."Copyright © 2023 Bay City News, Inc.

A rice shortage is sending prices soaring across the world. And things could get worse

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 16:27:07 GMT

Francis Ndege isn’t sure if his customers in Africa’s largest slum can afford to keep buying rice from him.Prices for rice grown in Kenya soared a while ago because of higher fertilizer prices and a yearslong drought in the Horn of Africa that has reduced production. Cheap rice imported from India had filled the gap, feeding many of the hundreds of thousands of residents in Nairobi’s Kibera slum who survive on less than $2 a day.But that is changing. The price of a 25-kilogram (55-pound) bag of rice has risen by about a fifth since June, going from the equivalent of about $14 to $18. Wholesalers are yet to receive new stocks since India, the world’s largest exporter of rice by far, said last month that it would ban some rice shipments. It’s an effort by the world’s most populous nation to control domestic prices ahead of a key election year — but it’s left a yawning gap of around 9.5 million metric tons (10.4 tons) of rice that people around the world need, roughly...

A Pennsylvania court says state police can’t hide how it monitors social media

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that the state police can’t hide from the public its policy on how it monitors social media.Advocates for civil liberties cheered the decision. The law enforcement agency had argued that fully disclosing its policy for using software to monitor online postings may compromise public safety. All four Democratic justices supported the majority decision, which said the lower Commonwealth Court went beyond its authority in trying to give the state police another attempt to justify keeping details of the policy a secret. Tuesday’s order appears to end a six-year legal battle.A state police spokesperson said the agency is reviewing the court decision. Andrew Christy, a lawyer with the ACLU of Pennsylvania, said the ruling “sort of puts law enforcement on the same playing field as all government agencies. If they have a legal justification to keep something secret, then they have to put forth sufficient evide...
