Opinion: Antioch police abuses need swift and accountable justice

Opinion: Antioch police abuses need swift and accountable justice I’m angry about the institutional racism and homophobia in the Antioch Police Department. These reprehensible views don’t reflect the values I see every day from my Antioch neighbors — the people law enforcement is sworn to protect and serve. For each day those involved in sending racist, homophobic messages — such as calling Black people the N-word and Black women “water buffaloes” — remain employed, the anger felt by people of color continues to intensify. These actions have shattered the trust and progress Antioch has worked so hard to build.I am no stranger to the deep hurt caused by racism, which I have experienced in many ways. Much of my childhood was spent in a mostly white Marin County community where I was one of the few African American kids at my school — facing discrimination, ridicule and outright racism. My parents marched on Washington D.C. with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and later sent me to Howard University, a historically Black college. Opinion: California children deserve a better start in life Silicon Valley is a place of immense wealth, yet almost half of the children here live in households that cannot afford to cover basic needs such as rent, food and health care, according to the 2023 Silicon Valley Index. These kids are our future. We must refuse to accept this status quo in which hundreds of thousands of children — disproportionately children of color — struggle while there are more than enough resources to help. We need to do it now.Despite the proven impact of early childhood development programs, governments chronically fail to invest in them. The United States spends about $500 annually per child on early childhood care, compared to the $14,436 average spending of other countries in the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel says season will not be ‘satisfactory’ even if team wins Bundesliga MUNICH (AP) — Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel says this season has been one to forget for the Bavarian powerhouse, even if it manages to pip Borussia Dortmund to the Bundesliga title on Saturday.Bayern is two points behind Dortmund going into the final day of the season and needs to beat Cologne away and hope that Mainz gets at least a draw against Dortmund if it is to extend its record of 10 straight German league titles.“It’s our own fault, our own responsibility,” Tuchel said Friday. “Of course, we’ll try to run the race to the end because we’re obliged to give everything to the end.”Bayern is facing the prospect of finishing the season without a major trophy for the first time since 2012.“It won’t be a season that we can be happy with. Regardless of how it goes in the end, it won’t be a satisfactory season anymore.”Tuchel took over from the fired Jul...
