The first time Lionel Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire played together, way back in the ’70s, they packed an arena. The last time Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire played together, Friday night at the TD Garden, well, they packed an arena.Back in the day, Earth, Wind and Fire were untouchable – the sharpest, coolest, most pop savvy of the funk kings. Richie was with the Commodores and not yet the breakout star. Now Richie is the bigger icon – with the closing spot on the duel headlining bill – but not much else has changed.Earth, Wind & Fire started the night bright, bold, loud, proud, funky, freaky, and fabulous. And that just describes their threads. Hey EFW, the ’70s called, the decade wants you to know it’s positively thrilled with your look, and sound, and energy, and vibe, and horn section. (Late band founder Maurice White would be thrilled too – the legacy is in the good hands of brother Verdine White and longtime members Philip Bailey and Ralph Johnson.)In just over an ...Tylor Megill, Mets routed by MLB-best Braves in series-opening loss

Everything was going well for Tylor Megill until it wasn’t.The Mets were routed by the Atlanta Braves 7-0 in the first game of a three-game series Friday night at Citi Field. Megill, the right-hander who has confounded the Mets with his struggles this season, was responsible for six of those runs (five earned) in his sixth loss of the season (6-6).However, the loss can’t fully be blamed on Megill. There were defensive miscues behind the big righty and there were empty at-bats against Charlie Morton and the NL-best Braves.Megill cruised through the first three innings, looking more like the pitcher that won his first three decisions of the season and less like the one that was demoted to Triple-A in June. But then he loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth and Brandon Nimmo misplayed a fly ball from Eddie Rosario in center field. Rosario’s single cleared the bases. Megill then gave up a single, an RBI double and another single before the first out — an ou...Chris Sale practically perfect in first game back from injury, Sox defeat Tigers

Chris Sale had an innings restriction for his first start in over two months, but he made the most of it.Taking the mound for Friday night’s series opener, the 34-year-old left-hander didn’t give the Detroit Tigers an inch early on, setting the stage for a commanding 5-2 Red Sox victory.Sale was perfect through four perfect innings, striking out six, and inducing eight swings & misses. Of the six balls put in play by the visiting lineup, only two left the bat with an exit velocity above 80.3 mph.Despite the reported four-inning limit, he came back out for the fifth. He got two quick outs before Kerry Carpenter broke up his perfecto bid with a 434-foot solo home run. When the Red Sox starter followed that up by hitting Javier Báez with a pitch, Alex Cora went to his bullpen.Sale walked off to a standing ovation from the Fenway faithful.
