Warriors’ trade for Chris Paul draws praise from ESPN pundits — well, most of them

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 16:36:46 GMT

The Warriors didn’t win the NBA championship and don’t have the top pick in Thursday’s NBA Draft. But Golden State stole the conversation on Draft day by agreeing to acquire Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards in a trade that would send dynamic guard Jordan Poole back to the nation’s capital.Even with generational superstar Victor Wembanyama’s likely selection by the San Antonio Spurs set to come on Thursday, ESPN’s coverage building up to the draft gave significant time to the Warriors-Wizards trade.JJ Redick said he was “fascinated” by the move, especially in the way that Paul will pair up with Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and coach Steve Kerr’s preferred style of offense.“The Warriors are a team that has thrived on body and ball movement — Steph has described their style of play as ‘chaotic,’” Redick said. “Then you think about Chris Paul, how methodical, how controlled, how organized he is. The Warriors have the shortest average touch length in the half-court. Ch...

Let Fisher go to Las Vegas but look for a way to put a new team in Oakland. Submit your letter to the editor via this form. Read more Letters to the Editor.S.J. mayor’s plans willboost quality of lifeI listened to the 2023-24 budget discussion on Zoom, and I was heartened by the City Council’s decision to include interim housing for the homeless, albeit less than Mayor Matt Mahan’s request. As the mayor points out, just funding affordable housing isn’t enough because it takes time to build permanent housing, and people suffer in the meanwhile. It’s clearly a matter of doing the humane thing.Following the larger budget discussion has also led to a big “ah-ha” for me: the mayor’s “Back to Basics” priorities to help the homeless, clean up the city and increase public safety are really about restoring the quality of San Jose life and making the city an attractive place for people and businesses. We have no choice: You have only to consider the closing of Westfield Mall in San Francisco and the reasons behind it if you need convincing.Larry KuboSan J...

A's 'SELL' t-shirts to go to Baseball HOF in Cooperstown

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 16:36:46 GMT

(KRON) -- Last week, the Oakland A's reverse boycott organized by fans had a successful turnout -- attendance more than tripled as nearly 28,000 were at the game. The shirt "SELL" thousands of A's fans wore that night on June 13 will now be chronicled in baseball history. The National Baseball Hall of Fame is in the process of adding the t-shirt to the museum, a Baseball HOF spokesperson confirmed to KRON4. Here's how the shirt made its way to Cooperstown.A "SELL" shirt was offered to the Hall of Fame by a fan, and it went through our standard evaluation process for fan-offered materials through a committee of Museum staff. The staff determined that the shirt would be worthy of addition to the Museum collection of nearly 40,000 artifacts that help us tell the story of baseball and its history, and we accepted the offer.Jon Shestakofsky, VP of Communications & Content for National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum(Photo by Brandon Vallance/Getty Images)(Photo by Brandon Valla...

Rule against blocking the plate leading to outs becoming runs even without a collision

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 16:36:46 GMT

As former big league catchers, Bob Melvin and Bruce Bochy certainly had their share of plays at the plate, and the current managers played in an era when big collisions with runners trying to score were just part of the game. The rules have changed over the years to protect catchers, but runners are now sometimes safe even after being tagged out, and without any collision. That happened this week to Melvin’s San Diego Padres and Bochy’s Texas Rangers. San Francisco’s Blake Sabol was originally called out in the fifth inning Wednesday night against the Padres. The call was changed after a lengthy replay review and Sabol was ruled safe when catcher Gary Sanchez was cited for blocking the plate. Melvin called it “one of the worst calls I’ve seen this year.”Bochy did Melvin one better, calling a similar play in the Rangers’ 7-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox the previous night “absolutely one of the worst calls I’ve ever seen and it was done by replay.” Like...

UEFA president Čeferin tells soccer fans how they can win the war against racists

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 16:36:46 GMT

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Soccer fans were told Thursday to play their part in driving racism out of the sport. Following the sickening abuse received by players like Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior, UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin called on supporters to identify offenders.“Let’s work together to put our house in order and ban from our stadiums (anyone) who comes not for love of football like you, but for the hatred for others,” he said during a speech at the European Football Fans’ Congress in Manchester.Vinícius, who is Black, has been the target of sustained racist abuse by fans in Spanish stadiums. An effigy of the Brazil international was hung from a bridge in Madrid in January and he has been subjected to repeated racist taunts. There are also a growing number of players being targeted on social media. Soccer’s ruling bodies have been called upon to do more to combat racism. Čeferin said fans need to step up as well. “Will you help us rid the game of people who hide...
