Five takeaways from Colorado’s election as voters reject Prop HH, oust DPS board members and more

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:44:09 GMT

Voters across Colorado delivered decisive results Tuesday night on key ballot questions and in hard-fought municipal and school board races, at least most of the time. With vote-counting still underway in some places, turnout appeared roughly in line with past odd-year elections — which is to say much lower than in years with races for president or state offices on the ballot. Exact turnout wasn’t yet available. Here are five takeaways from the emerging results:Voters defended TABOR — againColorado may have a Democratic trifecta in state government, but state leaders’ Proposition HH went down in flames — and it wasn’t even close. Perhaps the complexity of the measure doomed it, with Democrats throwing in a significant increase in education funding alongside the measure’s headline goal of delivering property tax relief, all of it paid for by diverting portions of future tax refunds.Or perhaps the rejection was the latest message from voters tha...

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:44:09 GMT

Primitive Beer, which has been making and selling specialty sour and wild ales from its elegant Longmont taproom since 2017, said this week that it will close that space and move its barrels and beer-making equipment inside a facility owned by New Image Brewing in Wheat Ridge.Once that happens, in December, Primitive will begin hosting bottle releases and open-koelschip nights beginning in January from “a newly constructed event space nestled within New Image’s production brewery and secondary taproom at 9505 W. 44th Ave., in Wheat Ridge. It will also host its signature Hot Bierfest pop-up nights at New Image in January, February and March. The change will allow co-owners Brandon and Lisa Boldt to spend their time and energy on brewing, blending, and packaging beer rather than on the retail side of the business.“Given that our entire family-run operation is just two people strong, we’ve reached the conclusion that our current professional juggling act … isn’t sustai...

South Korea meets France at popular bakery chain making its way into Colorado

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 07:44:09 GMT

Annie Song grew up eating pastries from Paris Baguette, but she could only get them when her family visited Los Angeles or New York. That’s because the South Korean-based chain, whose popularity in that country is akin to Starbucks in the U.S., hadn’t yet expanded as far as it has today. So when Song, who is Korean-American, had a chance to open a location near Denver, she took it. “I would always go (to New York or L.A.) to get my fix, but I wanted to bring Paris Baguette to Colorado, where we don’t have that type of variety or options to choose from,” she said.An entrepreneur who owned Explicit Streetwear, which sold graphic tees and jeans in Aurora before closing during the pandemic, Song opened her first Paris Baguette store at 10601 E. Garden Drive in Aurora last July. She isn’t the first local franchisee — there’s another Paris Baguette in Parker, which opened in March — but she has plans to grow quickly, and has signed on to open three m...
