MELFORT, Sask. — Mounties are scheduled to give an update today about what happened during a deadly mass stabbing in Saskatchewan last year. RCMP Assistant Commissioner Rhonda Blackmore previously committed to sharing a preliminary timeline of the rampage.Eleven people were killed and 18 were injured on the James Smith Cree Nation and in the nearby village of Weldon on Sept. 4.Myles Sanderson, the 32-year-old accused in the attacks, died in police custody a few days later.RCMP expect the latest update to take four hours and say it will include comments from Blackmore, as well as the officer in charge of major crimes in Saskatchewan.Mounties say it won’t affect two coroner’s inquests set for early next year. One of the inquests is to focus on the killings, while the other is to look at the suspect. Police have said Sanderson went into medical distress shortly after he was arrested near Rosthern, Sask.An independent investigation is also being conducted by Saskatoon police...Supreme Court of Canada to release ruling tied to 2007 mass gang slaying in B.C.

VANCOUVER — The Supreme Court of Canada is set to rule Friday on an appeal by two men found guilty of first-degree murder in the gang executions of six people in Metro Vancouver more than 15 years ago. Lawyers for Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston argued last October before the high court that the men were wrongfully denied an opportunity to give evidence about “egregious” police misconduct and cruel in-custody treatment that tainted their convictions. The case has been further complicated since those arguments because Johnston died of cancer last December. However, his lawyer Brock Martland said he spoke with Johnston the day before he died and he wanted the Supreme Court of Canada to order a hearing “to show the public the extent of police misconduct.”The B.C. Court of Appeal ruled in 2021 that Haevischer and Johnston should be allowed to seek a stay of proceedings for abuse of process and ordered an evidentiary hearing, but it stopped short of overturni...Trudeau visits N.Y.C. to build momentum as Canada, U.S. partner on critical minerals

Ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, Kenneth Munro’s Grade 2 class studied the history of the monarchy, staged a play about the Royal Family and all 700 students at his northern Ontario school listened live on radio as she took her oath. But with King Charles set to be formally crowned on May 6, school boards across the country contacted by The Canadian Press said they had no special plans or dedicated curriculum to mark the occasion – yet another indication of widening apathy towards the monarchy. Munro, a retired former history professor at the University of Alberta, recalled the crepe paper robe – complete with cotton balls and bunting – that he wore as a seven-year-old when cast as the incoming queen’s husband, Prince Philip, for the performance at his school in Longlac, Ont. “The whole community was really geared toward this event, and certainly at school, so that you couldn’t get away from it,” Munro, 77, said. “We were really steeped i...Overnight rain clearing, next severe threat arrives Friday

Risks of a direct military confrontation between the two nuclear powers, Russia and the United States, are steadily growing, the TASS news agency quoted a senior Russian diplomat as saying on Tuesday (25 April).Vladimir Yermakov, the foreign ministry's head of nuclear non-proliferation, told the Russian state news agency that Washington is escalating the risks through its conduct with Moscow.Since the start of its invasion on Ukraine 14 months ago, Moscow has issued regular charges against the US and what it calls "the collective West" for raising the risks of a nuclear war, rhetoric intended to deter Kyiv's allies."If the United States continues to follow its current course of confrontation with Russia, with the stakes constantly escalating on the verge of sliding into direct armed conflict, then the fate of START (nuclear arms treaty) may be a foregone conclusion," Yermakov said. The US told Russia in March that it will cease exchanging some data on its nuclear forces following Mos...Miss Manners: I don’t want to hurt the bride, but I have qualms about the wedding
Published Fri, 15 Nov 2024 08:59:57 GMT
DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have a nephew who is getting married this coming June. His fiancee is a gem of a girl, but my nephew and I have almost no relationship.I am wondering if I should attend the wedding. He and his dad (my brother) are ardent right-wingers, while I describe myself as a “rabid liberal.” I know I will be ignored by the immediate family, and I’m not close to the extended family, either. My feeling is that I should just keep to myself and send them a nice gift. But at the same time, I don’t want to hurt my nephew’s bride. What say you?GENTLE READER: Unpleasant family duties are not a new invention, although Miss Manners recognizes that the level of unpleasantness is on the rise. You should not attend if you know that your presence will, through no fault of your own, cause a scene that will mar the event. Merely that you will be bored is a less convincing excuse. If you do not attend, nothing bars you from writing a charming letter to the bride,...Dear Abby: My hairstylist’s obsession has become really annoying

DEAR ABBY: I’ve been going to an excellent hairstylist for a year and a half. The problem is she doesn’t want me to have color on my hair. She wants me to let my hair go gray. I detest the idea. She keeps insisting it is “so pretty,” and she won’t let it go. During my last visit, she became almost combative about it. She said she had expected me to stop asking for color by now.She colors her hair a beautiful shade of red. When I asked her about it, she said that “she had the right because she was born with that color.”It is very hard to get a hairstylist who knows how to cut my hair. Why do you think this has become such an obsession with her, and what should I do?HATES THE GRAYDEAR HATES: What you should do is take control.Related ArticlesAdvice | Dear Abby: Am I overreacting to my European daughter-in-law’s behavior?
