Every year, millions of beef cattle are born without horns, a trait that naturally emerged in Scottish pastures in the 16th century and has since spared many lives from goring. But when UC Davis created horn-free dairy cattle — through gene-editing, rather than generations of routine breeding — federal regulators did not welcome the new bovines to the herd.Under rigorous federal rules established in the early years of the genomic revolution, and upheld during the Obama administration, genetically modified animals are considered to be a new type of veterinary pharmaceutical, needing FDA approval. Without it, meat and milk can’t enter the food supply. As a result, the nine cows — and the experiment — are now dead, burned, at a cost of $1,200 each.“It was a waste. There wasn’t any risk,” said animal geneticist and professor Alison Van Eenennaam of UC Davis, who spent seven years on the project. “Basically, they were an unapproved drug.”In this July 11, 2018 photo, animal geneticis...One injured in Memorial Day shooting near Luma Hotel

PARIS (AP) — Two years ago at the French Open, Barbora Krejcikova arrived relatively unknown and relatively unaccomplished — and left with championships in both singles and doubles, something no woman had done at Roland Garros in more than 20 years.A year ago at the French Open, Krejcikova came in after three months off because of an elbow injury and her title defense in singles ended with a first-round loss, only the third ever by the previous year’s champion in more than a half-century of the Open era.And then her title defense in doubles ended before that event began thanks to a positive test for COVID-19, which hit her so hard she didn’t get out of bed for four days.As Krejcikova prepared to return to action in Paris on Tuesday, facing Lesia Tsurenko at Court 7, this much was clear in her mind: She does not want to dwell on what happened in Paris either of the past two years.“It all happened, but I’m definitely not thinking about it anymore,” Krejcikova said in an interview with...Vuelca una embarcación turística en el lago Mayor de Italia: hay al menos cuatro muertos

He was a forward on the 1996 Panthers team that made it to the Stanley Cup finals. As far as this year’s Panthers team, Lindsay and some of his teammates from 1996 see some similarities.“You have to have guys that are able to not shrink at this time of year but raise their game,” said Lindsay. “You have a bunch of guys that were able to raise their game when it came into the playoff time. You can see that with this team.”John Vanbiesbrouck, a former Panthers goalie, said the team has to ...Latest news
